Ethnic riots conspiracy averted in Karachi, says Musharraf

DERA GHAZI KHAN: President General Pervez Musharraf said that Karachi tragedy had occurred due to politicization of presidential reference against the Chief Justice of Pakistan and the elements involved in the said carnage also had hatched a conspiracy to convert it into ethnic riots.

“ I am glad that the conspiracy of ethnic riots in Karachi has been averted and situation in the metropolis has became normal,” he said while addressing a public gathering here.

The recent political violence over the suspension of Pakistan's chief justice was the result of a conspiracy to stoke ethnic tensions, he added.

"There are certain elements who gave ethnic colour to the crisis in a bid to create further chaos and cause more bloodshed in Karachi," he remarked.
.
"However the conspiracy hatched by these elements cannot work as political groups have already begun discussing ways to promote and preserve peace in Karachi," he said.

The president said a three-day strike scheduled by Pashtun parties in Karachi this weekend had been called off as a result of the negotiations.

He urged the people to vote for moderates in next elections. Pakistan had quit begging and that has elevated the image of Pakistan in international community. “We have enough resources and now we are providing aid to poor Muslim countries in the form of wheat and rice,” he said.

For the first time in country’s history, government is pending five hundred billion rupees on development projects, president stated.
